On-Premise Install Overview

Workspace.com Virtual Appliance (WVA) is an Application Lifecycle Management application that is delivered as a Virtual Machine (VM). Virtual Machine technology allows multiple Operating Systems to be run simultaneoulsy on a single physical computer. In VM terminology that Operating System in which other Operating Systems are running is referred to as the 'Host'. The Operating Systems running within the 'Host' are referred to as 'Guests'. In an WVA installation the Host is a 32 bit Windows or Linux operating system. The WVA VM is the Guest running within it's host operating system. Within a VM all hardware, including network, video, and hard disk, is virtualized. The WVA has 3 virtual hard disks and 1 virtual network adapter. Virtual hard disks are files that are located in the virtual machine directory on the host. These files grow as space is utilized by the workspace.com Virtual Machine. The virtual network adapter will have it's own network address separate from the Host, so it will appear as a separate physical machine on your network.

The WVA VM runs a combination of Oracle Enterprise Linux, Oracle Database Enterprise Edition, JBoss Application Server, Apache Web Server, and proprietary workspace.com code written in Java, JSP and Perl. Each of these has been tuned to the needs of WVA and require minimal configuration and maintenance.

Prerequisites

VMWare Server

WVA is designed to be run within the VMWare Virtual Machine Server. VMWare Server is a free download that is available for both Microsoft Windows and Linux Operating Systems. Download VMWare Server from: http://www.vmware.com/download

Operating System

Workspace.com Virtual Appliance must be run on a VMWare Server supported operating system. You can get a list of currently supported operating systems at: http://www.vmware.com

Memory

Memory is the most important resource for successfully running workspace.com Virtual Appliance. Failure to have adequate available free memory will result in both the WVA and applications running on the Host computer performing very poorly. Running WVA requires at least 768MB of available free memory on the Host computer. This means that after subtracting memory being used by existing applications on the Host computer, there should be 768MB of memory unused. You can determine available free memory as follows:

Windows

Note: Free memory should only be checked while all applications that will be running concurrently with WVA are running under normal operating conditions. Failure to do so will result in incorrect memory readings.

1. Open task manager. (Right click on Windows Toolbar and select Task Manager.)

2. Select the 'Performance' tab.

3. Note the amount of memory listed as 'Available' under the 'Physical Memory' section. This number should be greater than 768000.

Linux

Note: Free memory should only be checked while all applications that will be running concurrently with WVA are running under normal operating conditions. Failure to do so will result in incorrect memory readings.

1. Open a terminal.

2. Enter the following command: free -k -m

3. Note the amount at the intersection of free and -/+ buffers/cache. This number should be greater than 768

Note: Remember that this is the minimum amount of memory. Actual memory required will be vary depending on the number of concurrent users and work patterns of each user. To determine the optimum amount of memory see the Performance Tuning section.

Disk

Workspace.com Virtual Appliance requires a minimum of 10GB of disk space to install. Actual diskspace needed will be determined by the number and size of documents and data you intend to store in WVA. A base installation of WVA will use approximately 7.5GB of storage, leaving 2.5GB of storage available for data and document storage. To monitor and adjust the amount of storage available see the Performance Tuning section.

Note: On Windows you must use NTFS as the FAT32 filesystem only supports files up to 4GB in size. Workspace.com Virtual Appliance ships with files exceeding this file size limit.

License Key

Workspace.com Virtual Appliance requires a valid License Key to operate. You should have recieved a License Key with your purchase. If you can not locate your License Key contact you sales representative.
